Nineteen-time Grammy nominee, Four-time Grammy winner and all-time guitar great, Larry Carlton possesses an extraordinary capacity to communicate both the freedom and technical aspects of playing the blues. Merging art and science, Larry shares with his audience the philosophical, mechanical, and musical approach to a genre rich in expression and improvisation.

Throughout his master class, Larry focuses on his love of blues and jazz, and helps his audience to explore the different approaches comping and soloing over choruses, as well as how to support a solo musically and develop personal solos. His goal during his courses are to help players better understand improvisation, rhythm playing, and soloing skills to help each musician find his or her voice.

Larry’s classes offer the absolute most in diverse opportunities for students to not only interact and understand a top professional and his techniques, experiences and history, but to gain personal knowledge about the world of music through this living legend’s eyes. His main objective is to share his knowledge and experience with students throughout our nation and world.

Larry also brings with him his extensive collection of recordings, spanning over 30 albums. With over 3,000 sessions, 200 hit records and 100 gold albums to his credit, Carlton has his fingerprints indelibly imprinted on virtually every genre of music. He uses his recordings as a tool to communicate different techniques, as well as to give his audience greater insight to each song and its history.

In an attempt to better connect with his audience, Larry keeps the session open with opportunities to ask questions and communicate candidly. His students are encouraged to delve deeper into all the different aspects of playing and to take advantage of having an established teacher like Larry at their disposal to help better their craft.

Larry Carlton – Residency Program

Larry Carlton’s residencies offer the absolute most in diverse opportunities for students to not only interact and understand a top professional and his techniques, experiences and history, but to gain personal knowledge about the world of music through this living legend’s eyes.

Larry Carlton offers a wide range of educational courses throughout his residency programs. He offers one-to-one classes, instruction to small groups, as well as lectures, master classes and clinics. For extended engagements he can also offer a performances with the school’s band.

The entire audience is then welcome to remain after the show, where they are treated to an autograph session with Larry. So not only do the students and faculty get to enjoy the benefits of the artist’s residency, but so does the community. Culminating with a true, personal experience with the artist.

He successfully gave students a renewed understanding in the history of jazz, inspired students with his life journey, and brought the music students to a level where they can excel in their instrument, with a drive that only few can teach. Larry Carlton has conducted clinics from high school levels to professionals. The clinics are varied and tailored to the institutions needs and are usually limitied to no more than 150 people. They may be as specific as guitar techniques, as general as music composition for jazz, contemporary jazz, and scoring or as broad as the life of a touring musician. A number of these and other topics are included in a clinic which usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes depending on audiencce participation. Some of the clinics are more interactive and include working with the institutions’ big band followed by a concert. He conducts his clinics with his guitar, and requires some basic backline. Some institutions also bring Larry Carlton’s touring band for a performance to coincide with the residency, while others rather he work with their big band or in combination with any of the following; concert band, wind ensemble or symphony orchestra.
